Online ‘green’ Machine

Amvar is forecasting a record year in 2011/12 with sales turnover expected to increase by 36% on the previous year. Subcon supports UK exhibitors

Next year’s Subcon Exhibition (12-14 June) at the NEC, Birmingham, will extend its support for UK manufacturers by sponsoring the participation of key industry sectors – initially metalforming and cast metals.
Subcon is the UK’s only event dedicated to contract and subcontract manufacturing. As more and more UK companies look to outsource manufacturing operations, it plays a vital role in ensuring that they put British companies on their shortlist of suppliers and can benchmark them against a global market.

Hunter automated mourns the loss of its founder

William Allen ‘Al’ Hunter, originator of the matchplate moulding machine and mould handling system for sand casting, has died aged 89. He pioneered many of the techniques and machine concepts used worldwide in the foundry industry today. A true giant in the world foundry market, Hunter changed the way sand casting was done, by his invention of the matchplate moulding and mould handling system in 1964, when he built his first machine, helped by his son and current president of the company, Bill, for sale to Moline Corporation of Illinois, a malleable iron foundry. He will be missed by all who knew him and appreciated his zest for life and especially his love of invention.

A trio of senior appointments

Foseco has announced the appointment of David Hughes as president foundry with effect from 1 October 2011. Foseco is the foundry division of Vesuvius and is the global leader in products and solutions for improving foundry performance. Based in Shanghai (China), Hughes succeeds Jeff Weeks who has retired following a 20 year career with the company.

The development in the UK of a Foundation Degree in Casting Technology is an example of a collaborative process between academia and industry. Driven by the Institute of Cast Metals Engineers and BradfordCollege it has been supported by foundries and is now entering its third year. Here Richard Brown, head of metallurgy and materials section at the college, describes the process that led to the development.

A global dilemma

Developing and maintaining a skilled workforce equipped to cope with changing customer demands, raw material and process needs and a dynamic marketplace is nothing new. Looking at an article published in Foundry Trade Journal in 1961, the need to develop options to train foundry technicians and professional engineers was considered fundamental to the industry’s future. Here we are 50 years later, still discussing the same dilemma – and, despite the huge boom in BRIC nations, the problem of training tomorrow’s foundry engineers is not confined to the western world.

Die casting boom in Europe continues

During 2011, the European and particularly the German economy have been regarded as in excellent shape. The start of the year was extremely dynamic. In the first six months, the gross domestic product grew distinctly in Europe and by 3% in Germany. Here, the Federal Association of the German Die Casting Industry (BDG) looks at the role die casting is playing in today’s marketplace.

EUROGUSS 2012: the die casting industry’s get-together in Nürnberg
European die casting experts will meet at EUROGUSS in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg (Germany) 17-19 January 2012, when the some anticipated 400 exhibitors will provide information on the latest technology, processes and products. There are over 7,000 die casting experts expected to attend to use the show to prepare for investments due at the beginning of the year and look for solutions to their technical requirements. The International Die Casting Congress takes place parallel to the exhibition and for the first time in hall 7. Other highlights include the special show Research for Knowledge and the announcement of the winners of the International Aluminium Die Casting and Zinc Die Casting Competitions.
